Sunday update 13th August 2017

Hi all,

Welcome to the new weekly update where we’ll be showing progress on our free to play games available from our Patreon page, our playtesting updates and any other exciting news!

Firstly we have released two games for August, downloadable here.

  • Emotions is a family friendly matching game designed for families with cute custom artwork made specifically for it.
  • Cat Academy is another family friendly game, but this time competitive with players trying to score the highest points before every player has 5 cards or more. With no way to discard except passing cards it can become frantic fun.

Emotions cars and book shown

A new poll is up ready for September for Patrons too, let us know what you would like to see released for September. Currently were looking at Social Deduction September and we’ve got an awesome game being finalised for it – Mystery on the SS Sandbrook – a game that’s been in development for over 2 years and playtested over 200 times.

Two cards shown for the doctor, injure and kill

Playtesting – as you may know the club is closed over the summer break so little playtesting gets done – however we have been playing Village Life on TableTopSim quite a bit this week, which is coming along well!

Interested in a physical copy if any of our upcoming board or card games? Let us know here. Thanks!

Finally a massive thank you to Paul for helping us out by joining the Patreon! Every dollar we get each month helps to provide free resources and keep the tabletop club running as a space for kids to be safe and have fun. Keep up the good work!

Mystery on the SS Sandbrook

Sneak peak at some of the characters in the upcoming free print to play game SS Sandbrook. A social deduction game currently in final editing ready for an Autumn release! Get this and others from our website!

Sunday Progress Update: 30th July 2017

Hi all! Here’s our roundup of this week’s progress, playtesting results, an overview of what’s available and what’s coming soon. Stay tuned!

Emotions version 1.0 Release

Emotions is available for download for all Patreon Subscribers or from the TES store. We are currently looking into ways of making it more widely available.

Patreon changes to early access

With the release of Emotions it makes sense to make some changes to our Patreon model. We’ve changed from a ‘pay at the end’ model to monthly. In practice this means I can budget any income for the club each month alongside any paid resources from the TES store into improving the club for our students as well as printing copies of our educational / mental health resources for local schools. Its not much at the moment but it all helps keep it running! Consider joining us here and get early access and discounts on our games, resources etc.

New Educational games: GCSE Keywords Dominoes and flashcards.

We recently created a set of GCSE RS Dominoes and flashcards available on the TES store. I am hoping to expand these out to other subjects, especially to expand our mental health reach like with Emotions. These are currently available here.

Any profit from this store will go to creating further resources and providing them to schools as with the Patreon.

Expansions? Village Life grows larger…

Those if you who have been following this blog will know that I have been working on a game called Village Life, currently in version 0.4D. Its a board game where players explore 24 unknown tiles, then build up an economy placing industry buildings like farms and blacksmiths and finally work their way into politics to become the local lord. More info and an overview here.

As I idly wait for the first proper printed prototype from China – currently somewhere in the middle of deepest Russia – I have been thinking of different expansions that can be made and am quite excited by two ideas. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

1. The Island

Picture of an octopus for

Players receive a new deck of 24 exploration cards and a few new buildings. The tiles have an outline of an island on the back and a broken bridge that connects it to the mainland.

On the tile faces there are new places to explore once the connecting bridge has been repaired. These include:

Lake: allows Fishery: +1 food for every 2 farms owned

Tiki tower: allows you to travel to any unknown space

Beach: allows Beach Hut – 1 income per turn

Jungle – allows Forester, but player is delayed for one turn (cannot explore)

Mineral rich sands – allows Mine

Broken Bridge – connects to mainland when upgraded

Tribe – can’t be built on but something special happens when you land?

Volcano: exploration quest linked to the Tribe.

2: The Cult

Picture of an eye in a triangle - of course!

Of course theres an eye in a triangle involved…

That’s right! The cult is coming to your town! Don’t delay – join today!

Join

The cult introduces a new building – the Dark Temple. The player that builds it becomes the head cultist and spreads dark influence across the town in place of Honour.

Once the majority of a player’s buildings have been caught in this influence, they join the cult and help to spread the dark influence across the town.

Join us

If the majority of players turn to the cult, or the head of the Council is a cultist, the town council changes to a new Cult board, replacing the Council and having different powers.

Players can use the Keep buildings to protect their buildings from influence. These now spreading Council Influence instead.

Have you joined us yet?

Mechanically, cult players receive Influence instead of Honour.

Have alternative to honor which is power gained by spreading cult and gaining power in the cult leadership. – black tokens used as honor but also placed on buildings.

Free influence with every sign up!

Of course neither of these will be done before the base game is ready, and both will need a lot of testing first – but hope these give you some inspiration for your own games!

Playtesting this week :

Tatorship by MakerofGames

This week we have started looking into a guest card game called Tatorship – a competitive game where players fight to become the first (or best) dictator, with a cute potato theme. We got the rules down pat so will let you know how the full game pans out next week!

Sins of Satan / Demon Controller 0.8

Name change and update this week, so testing for the newer edition. Have also created a tile based quick version which is being printed off and will be on the list of things needing playtesting!

We’ve playtested it 4 times for far this week with an equal amount of Demon to Good wins which is looking positive so far!

Also played a couple of rounds of SS Sandbrook 0.7 to get us ready for the new printed version of 0.8a’s arrival in the post – currently residing somewhere in Russia lol. We learnt that fun is good and there should be more of it.

See you all later!

Due for testing…
SS Sandbrook v.0.8a: Have ordered professionally printed version, due to arrive around the 20th, which is the day the club closes for Summer (of course!)

Snollygoster, by Mr.Lovens. printed, awaiting playtest.

Human Hunting; by Iceaxe games, printed, awaiting playtest.

Thursday Roundup: 29th June 2017

Playtesting this week :

Not much to report this week! Between not being in and playing Munchkin there isn’t much to report, so just a quick summary today.

Emotions 0.3 – Mechanics work well, playtesting it some more but waiting for artwork to print out 0.4. There’s some new cards added in the next version so that will need playtesting in the next few weeks when it’s ready. It’s a simple mix and match so shouldn’t need much playtesting to bring to 1.0.

Village Life (alpha 0.3/0.4)- Board game; Explore, Expand, Elect.

Only one proper playtest this week so not much to add!

Heist! 0.4

New version of Heist! Has been made with an additional character, and some balancing. Playtesting this week has focused on balance, with the Mastermind winning one more time than the Investigator – at 6 wins to 5.

We look next to playtesting the new character in the coming weeks, this also changes around the amount of cards per character so will be interesting to see how this version plays out.

Have also started collating the playtesting win resukts using ScorePal -let me know what you think of this app in the comments below!

Due for testing…

SS Sandbrook v.0.8b; looking to print it out professionally. Players are currently regularly playing version 7 – but doesn’t need playtesting any more.

Snollygoster, by Mr.Lovens. printed, awaiting playtest. Still – sorry!

Human Hunting; by Iceaxe games, printed, awaiting playtest. Still!!

Sunday Progress Update: 25th June 2017

Hi all! Here’s our roundup of this week’s progress, an overview of what’s available and what’s coming soon.

I have been out quite a lot this week so less progress than usual. Village life is going well and popular with the students and Emotions is waiting on artwork. Take a look below!

Village Life: Explore, Expand, Elect.

Turning over an exploation card in Village Life

Current version 0.3D
Still playtesting prototype 3, an economy game designed for teenagers, but with a complexity that adults will also enjoy. This has been our main target for playtesting this week.

About 20 new buildings have been added as upgrades to buildings from 0.2, players can now upgrade farms to estates etc, with new artwork.

Currently working on upgrading to prototype 4 which will:

  • Redesign and improve the politics aspect (started)
  • Look into practical aspects of printing etc. (Currently way too high. The prototype is going to cost $70 as it is now)
  • Ensure portability whilst keeping quality
  • Standardise the buildings etc

More info here and here.

Emotions:

See more information here.

Matching game based on matching emotional vocabulary. To be used in schools / young parents, especially those with learning difficulties or other similar. Likely to be released free to Patrons.

Only changes this week are assigning definitions to each card and finding someone to do the art work. I am getting an example done soon for feedback, currently we are going for cute chibis due to price and target age (kids)

Game mechanics: 0.8 (mechanics are based on familiar matching games like ‘Old Maid’)
Artwork: 0.3 (waiting on artwork example)
Rules and rulebook: 0.8 (as above)

The inspiration behind Village Life

What inspired you to make Village Life?

Image shows Village Life 0.3, showing the main deck and additional building cards

The current prototype cards, ready to play

As you may be aware I run a little tabletop club at a school for a variety of reasons, alongside making educational, mental health and ‘just for fun’ card games. So why begin work making a board game? (And based on the costing to print it out professionally… an expensive one!) Here’s a little into how it started and just a couple of games that have inspired me.
The Guild/The Guild 2

Intro video

The Guild series of games, originally make by JoWood studios (who made games with awesome ideas, but that were bug ridden messes) has always been one of my favourites and spawned a good deal of expansions that never quite fixed the bugs but expanded the game further, keeping it interesting. Despite the inevitable game breaking bugs, the theme has always interested me in two ways.

Firstly the politics part has definitely influenced the elections in village life. Here players have to try to reach the rank of Noble via other positions, being elected in by other, competing players. Bribery is rife in Village Life, so to keep their positions, players will have to work together through exchanging favours or outlandishly bribing one another to get ahead or stay in position – don’t be surprised when you are backstabbed and overthrown if you are close to winning by the other players. This adds further competitiveness to the game.

A little empty, but the council seats will fill up…

Beyond the political, the idea of building a business up over time definitely influenced the economy part of Village Life. In The Guild, players purchase basic workshops and use the income from these to expand their business empire. Originally instead of goods we had a set of secondary and tertiary resources. For example ore turned into iron which was then processed into weapons, armour or jewelry similar to that in the Guild. This ended up way too complicated (and expensive!) for a board game, so the idea of goods took their place.

The guild 3 is due out sometime later this year, so fingers crossed we’ll finally get a new update on the big ridden series!

Splendor

Before Village Life was a thing there was “The Regent”, which was a more indepth part of the politics area above, with a basic economy based on a simple version of a Slendor-style economy. Here rather than getting rubies, emeralds etc, players could invest in a building each turn which gave an income based on what other buildings you had. An example is farms – farms and mills both gave one coin per round each, however if you had both, you would receive an extra coin for having the supply chain. In this way players wanted to get certain buildings and made a different way to win. This idea was carried into the economy aspect of Village Life, with players building up their economies over time to become more powerful.

In playtests there’s one player who always goes for economy over Honour, with the idea that they will just buy it later. A good long term idea instead of fighting for political roles and getting round the need for bribes.

Splendor is available here. The app is pretty good, despite some bugs but of course it’s better in a group!

The Curious Expedition / Renowned Explorers: International Society.

The exploration part of the game is definitely inspired by the exploration / hidden areas part of thess games. Early on in Village Life’s life there was a simple map that players put buildings into set areas. Pretty quickly however I wanted to change it to make it more interesting, where players can stumble upon areas good for different things or with bonuses. This also means much more replayability for players and is much easier to add expansions later if needed.
