Sunday Progress Update: 23rd July 2017

Hi all! Here’s our roundup of this week’s progress, playtesting results, an overview of what’s available and what’s coming soon. Stay tuned!

What have we been working on and playtesting this week?

New Educational games: GCSE Keywords Dominoes

Currently created GCSE RS Dominoes for next year. If they work well and are popular I will expand out to other subjects. These are currently available here.

I have also set up a TES account to sell the educational resources. Any profit from this will go to creating further resources and providing them to schools.

Playing: Village Life; Explore, Expand,Elect

How to play – Version 0.4

Exploration

Cards are randomly laid out from the village centre outwards, with players exploring one connected piece each turn.

Exploration map on the left – buildings on the right

Tiles showing unknown spaces and city centre

Latest version with proper tiles!

Players move one space from the village center each turn, and may build an appropriate building on their new land. Players start with 1 coin, so can only afford to build farms, foresters or mines.

Player turning over a forest card

A rare forest on the first turn – lucky! This player will build a forester, netting 1 wood every turn

Play then continues out with players exploring and building.

Player 2 turning over a plains card

Plains cards are the basic card with no bonuses. Allowing early farms to be built

Player finds Iron

Mountains discovered – an easy way to get iron

Here players have been lucky – finding mountains and forest early.

A little later, players still exploring but now building up their economy. On the right you can see the Council has also been started.

As players develop their economy and spaces for building runs out, players begin building more advanced economies, with upgraded farms (estates), and buildings that convert base materials into goods. Finally buildings such as the Keep will turn these goods into Honour, which is how you win the game.

In a short game the player with 15 Honour first is the winner.

Let have a look at some of the buildings:

A stack of cards for village life

Fresh from the post office

Estate card showing price and income

The Estate card is an upgrade from the farm, producing twice the food but at a cost to upgrade

Mill card showing price and conversion of food to goods

The mill costs 5 coin and 3 wood to build, but converts one of your food into goods every turn. Well worth the investment

Bakery card, an upgrade from the Mill

Fancy more goods? Got a booming economy? Upgrade to a Bakery and get 2 goods a turn!

Of course as some make legitimate profit, others make money in more illicit ways. Players can also invest in building up from a (not so) humble thieves den, to become robber barons with the Robbers Keep, which earns more money the more players that are in the game.

a11a11b

A more legitimate way of earning may be through the market. In longer games there becomes a demand for an easy way to swap between food wood and ore. Once upgraded the market building allows the controlling player to swap between goods – giving them control later in the game.

Trading post gives you some early honor

The trading post might not be an amazing investment early in the game, but its upgrade will be later – and theres only one available

Market building allows trade betwen resources

Building the market costs quite an investment, but you no longer have to rely on anyone else trading with you, and you can use this to your advantage over others.

Similaly finding and building the temple building gives a little regular income, but once upgraded later becomes a powerful regular way to get honour, to finding the temple early can swing the game later on.

Wonder buikding showing 10 goods upfront but 2 honour every turn

10 good is an insane investment. But 2 honour a turn means winning is almost assured

Elections

Players may also upgrade the town centre into a City with a little investment. This allows players to get involved in their political ambitions, gaining a steady income of money and honour and gaining other benefits such as charging leasing fees on other players – or just throwing them in jail.

Board showiklng the town council positions and jail

Everyone wants to be the Noble

Town council positions

Players vote for each other to get council positions – so a little bribery and friendship early on can becone very useful later

If more than one player goes for the same position, a vote is called and the winner takes the position. If a position is already taken and the applying player is not voted in, they return to their old position. If an incumbent player is voted out however, they return to Citizen position. So it’s dangerous to be at the top without the correct bribes!

The game ends when a player has 15 Honour for a short game and 30 for a longer game.

Patreons can get a print and play of the latest version right now – the full game is still in development for the end of 2017.

Ideas for expansions now available to take a look at – here!

Expansions? Village Life grows larger…

Those if you who have been following this blog will know that I have been working on a game called Village Life, currently in version 0.4D. Its a board game where players explore 24 unknown tiles, then build up an economy placing industry buildings like farms and blacksmiths and finally work their way into politics to become the local lord. More info and an overview here.

As I idly wait for the first proper printed prototype from China – currently somewhere in the middle of deepest Russia – I have been thinking of different expansions that can be made and am quite excited by two ideas. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

1. The Island

Picture of an octopus for

Players receive a new deck of 24 exploration cards and a few new buildings. The tiles have an outline of an island on the back and a broken bridge that connects it to the mainland.

On the tile faces there are new places to explore once the connecting bridge has been repaired. These include:

Lake: allows Fishery: +1 food for every 2 farms owned

Tiki tower: allows you to travel to any unknown space

Beach: allows Beach Hut – 1 income per turn

Jungle – allows Forester, but player is delayed for one turn (cannot explore)

Mineral rich sands – allows Mine

Broken Bridge – connects to mainland when upgraded

Tribe – can’t be built on but something special happens when you land?

Volcano: exploration quest linked to the Tribe.

2: The Cult

Picture of an eye in a triangle - of course!

Of course theres an eye in a triangle involved…

That’s right! The cult is coming to your town! Don’t delay – join today!

Join

The cult introduces a new building – the Dark Temple. The player that builds it becomes the head cultist and spreads dark influence across the town in place of Honour.

Once the majority of a player’s buildings have been caught in this influence, they join the cult and help to spread the dark influence across the town.

Join us

If the majority of players turn to the cult, or the head of the Council is a cultist, the town council changes to a new Cult board, replacing the Council and having different powers.

Players can use the Keep buildings to protect their buildings from influence. These now spreading Council Influence instead.

Have you joined us yet?

Mechanically, cult players receive Influence instead of Honour.

Have alternative to honor which is power gained by spreading cult and gaining power in the cult leadership. – black tokens used as honor but also placed on buildings.

Free influence with every sign up!

Of course neither of these will be done before the base game is ready, and both will need a lot of testing first – but hope these give you some inspiration for your own games!

Hi all! Here’s our roundup of this week’s progress, an overview of what’s available and what’s coming soon.

From next week this will be both a playtesting and progress update so enjoy! Patreon changes may also be happening soon to become more of an early access model, rather than once per completed game.

Well kind of – I’ve managed to fiddle enough with the settings to actually get it running enough to be useful (my graphics card broke!) – so fingers crossed you’ll be able to play Harle Games prototypes when they are up!

Thursday Roundup: 06th July 2017

Playtesting this week :

Tatorship by MakerofGames

This week we have started looking into a guest card game called Tatorship – a competitive game where players fight to become the first (or best) dictator, with a cute potato theme. We got the rules down pat so will let you know how the full game pans out next week!

Sins of Satan / Demon Controller 0.8

Name change and update this week, so testing for the newer edition. Have also created a tile based quick version which is being printed off and will be on the list of things needing playtesting!

We’ve playtested it 4 times for far this week with an equal amount of Demon to Good wins which is looking positive so far!

Also played a couple of rounds of SS Sandbrook 0.7 to get us ready for the new printed version of 0.8a’s arrival in the post – currently residing somewhere in Russia lol. We learnt that fun is good and there should be more of it.

See you all later!

Due for testing…
SS Sandbrook v.0.8a: Have ordered professionally printed version, due to arrive around the 20th, which is the day the club closes for Summer (of course!)

Snollygoster, by Mr.Lovens. printed, awaiting playtest.

Human Hunting; by Iceaxe games, printed, awaiting playtest.

Thursday Roundup: 29th June 2017

Playtesting this week :

Not much to report this week! Between not being in and playing Munchkin there isn’t much to report, so just a quick summary today.

Emotions 0.3 – Mechanics work well, playtesting it some more but waiting for artwork to print out 0.4. There’s some new cards added in the next version so that will need playtesting in the next few weeks when it’s ready. It’s a simple mix and match so shouldn’t need much playtesting to bring to 1.0.

Village Life (alpha 0.3/0.4)- Board game; Explore, Expand, Elect.

Only one proper playtest this week so not much to add!

Heist! 0.4

New version of Heist! Has been made with an additional character, and some balancing. Playtesting this week has focused on balance, with the Mastermind winning one more time than the Investigator – at 6 wins to 5.

We look next to playtesting the new character in the coming weeks, this also changes around the amount of cards per character so will be interesting to see how this version plays out.

Have also started collating the playtesting win resukts using ScorePal -let me know what you think of this app in the comments below!

Due for testing…

SS Sandbrook v.0.8b; looking to print it out professionally. Players are currently regularly playing version 7 – but doesn’t need playtesting any more.

Snollygoster, by Mr.Lovens. printed, awaiting playtest. Still – sorry!

Human Hunting; by Iceaxe games, printed, awaiting playtest. Still!!

Sunday Progress Update: 25th June 2017

Hi all! Here’s our roundup of this week’s progress, an overview of what’s available and what’s coming soon.

I have been out quite a lot this week so less progress than usual. Village life is going well and popular with the students and Emotions is waiting on artwork. Take a look below!

What have we been working on this week?

Village Life: Explore, Expand, Elect.

Turning over an exploation card in Village Life

Current version 0.3D
Still playtesting prototype 3, an economy game designed for teenagers, but with a complexity that adults will also enjoy. This has been our main target for playtesting this week.

About 20 new buildings have been added as upgrades to buildings from 0.2, players can now upgrade farms to estates etc, with new artwork.

Currently working on upgrading to prototype 4 which will:

  • Redesign and improve the politics aspect (started)
  • Look into practical aspects of printing etc. (Currently way too high. The prototype is going to cost $70 as it is now)
  • Ensure portability whilst keeping quality
  • Standardise the buildings etc

More info here and here.

Emotions:

See more information here.

Matching game based on matching emotional vocabulary. To be used in schools / young parents, especially those with learning difficulties or other similar. Likely to be released free to Patrons.

Only changes this week are assigning definitions to each card and finding someone to do the art work. I am getting an example done soon for feedback, currently we are going for cute chibis due to price and target age (kids)

Game mechanics: 0.8 (mechanics are based on familiar matching games like ‘Old Maid’)
Artwork: 0.3 (waiting on artwork example)
Rules and rulebook: 0.8 (as above)

SS Sandbrook

A social deduction card game for 3- 9 players. More info here and here.

A small update this week 0.8-0.8a to change and standardise some of the cards to make them easier to read and understand. Also standardised the injury cards so there are less arguments over meaning!

Artwork: 0.4
